Promoting Positive Opportunities at Braintree Youth Festival

On 28 August, Essex Youth Service and Braintree District Council hosted a Youth Festival at Weavers Park in the heart of Braintree, bringing together local organisations and young people for a day of activities, information and engagement.

Essex Violence and Vulnerability Unit (VVU) attended the event in partnership with Braintree Rugby Club, with members of the club’s Under-16 team helping to promote the importance of young people accessing positive activities and local opportunities. Together, they highlighted how involvement in sports, youth clubs, drama groups and other community projects can help young people build confidence, develop skills and form positive connections.

Throughout the day, more than 200 information cards and keyrings were distributed, signposting young people to local activities and support. The rugby players also spoke to their peers about the Essex Map, an online tool that helps young people discover opportunities and services available in their local area, sharing their own positive experiences of being part of a team.

The VVU also gathered feedback from young people about community safety, crime concerns and how they would like to see their local areas improved. The conversations provided valuable insights that will be shared with local partners, including the council and police.

The event was a fantastic example of partnership working, with Braintree Rugby Club’s young ambassadors playing a key role in engaging their peers and promoting positive opportunities. With great weather, strong community spirit and plenty of enthusiasm, the festival was a positive celebration of the young people of Essex.
