Last week the VVU joined the young people at Rainbow Services, Harlow to support them to install a fantastic new sensory garden and interactive space in the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Essex VVU supports the work of Rainbow Services for its carpentry project, which helps young people who have struggled with engagement at school. Youth workers support young people in a purpose-built carpentry workshop, helping them gain qualifications while re-engaging them with positive role models, community activities, and education.

So, back at the build, our VVU colleague Jim wasn’t let off easily, the young people made him get stuck in and delighted in telling him how bad his measuring skills were!

Building something for the community helps the young people feel a community connection. Helping the young people feel part of their community then reduces their risk of violence and exploitation.

Jason Shave, Youth Project Manager from Rainbow Services thanked Jim and the VVU for their support, commitment and engagement with the young people at the Big Build: “Your willingness to interact, listen, and get involved truly enriched the experience for everyone, especially the young people. This kind of positive community engagement is so important, and it certainly didn’t go unnoticed.” Thank you once again for making such a significant and positive difference. Partnership work goes a long way in breaking barriers down and a long-term relationship with the young people in our community.”

It really was a great day, making something special that will benefit the community for many years to come.
